February Bloom Day: Short & Sweet

These hyacinths will soon be on their last legs, but they're still perfuming the air around my desk and reminding me that, yes, spring will eventually be here. This year I forced 'Pink Pearl' and 'Delft Blue' (which you see here) and 'L'Innocence,' a white variety that has unfortunately finished blooming already. They were termed "best early forcers" by John Scheepers bulbs, and I have to say they did bloom early. A little too early, thanks to my impatience. I found 'L'Innocence' to be very powerfully fragrant, and I plan to grow it again next spring, maybe with some 'Blue Jacket' or 'City of Haarlem.'

Our moderating temperatures are melting the mountains of snow and, even though I know it's just a short-lived tease, they signal that one day (relatively) soon there will blooms in the garden to share!

And I have some lovely Valentine's Day flowers to enjoy too...always a nice touch!

Your hyacinths are so pretty--definitely a touch of spring! I'm still waiting for any signs of growth from mine. The Valentine roses are lovely!

What is your secret to getting your hyacinths to be so compact? I worry about mine getting top heavy on glass (should they ever bloom). Seeing yours, I'm more convinced than ever I need early, mid & late blooming hyacinths to force.

Rose--Thanks!! I think you were right that you'll be enjoying indoor and outdoor hyacinths at the same time, which to me would be great.

GG--Thank you! I'm going to miss the scent of the hyacinths so much; they're almost gone!

MMD--Well, this year they're too compact because I took them out too soon, and about 1/3 of them didn't grow properly (not seen in the photo :) And some do flop. Last year I had some 'Blue Jacket' floppers, which is part of why I didn't grow them this year. Definitely look for the "early forcer" recommendations in Brent & Becky's or Scheepers.

Oh the fragrance of the hyacinths, Rose! They certainly make me feel like Spring is just around the corner.

Meanwhile I am skirting some pretty deep puddles as the snow piles melt away. We are gonna have close to 60 degrees on Thursday!

Those are the sweetest short hyacinths I have ever seen. The fragrance must be a delight.

Great to see your photos from snowy IL. I am in snow-covered Pennsylvania, but the temperature suddenly shot up and I managed to find some flowers outside. Happy GBBD, Carolyn

Hyacinths: always a favorite. None forced here this year, a mistake. Happy Bloom day.
