Lilac Love

They're as common as can be, but I absolutely adore a good old fashioned lilac. I think their scent is heavenly and I am always disappointed at how briefly the blooms are present. I have been making an effort to visit my lilac once a day and inhale its fragrance at least for a few moments. Yesterday, I found this butterfly enjoying the flowers as much as I was.

If anyone knows what kind of butterfly this is, please share! I am no expert.

The blooms will be gone soon, but they've been a great spirit-lifter the last couple weeks. What are some of your favorite flowering shrubs?

Wow! Those are beautiful! What a cool picture with the butterfly . . . will you email me a copy for a little nature photo collage? :) Lilacs are also one of my favorites, can't forget that big one in our yard on North Avenue! My other favorite is forsythia . . . they're such an amazing shade of yellow and they're one of the first bloomers, so they really pick up one's spirits at the first hint of spring. They're a very commonly-used shrub around the highways and parkways here on LI, so for a few weeks in March my commute is really nice and colorful, just when it's desperately needed!

I so agree that lilacs can lift the spirits.

I think your butterfly is a Swallowtail. It goes so well with the Lilac, it's almost as if you bought a plastic one & stuck it on there. (Not that you ever would.) There's just something about the scent of Lilacs...

Thanks MMG! It was such a rare moment I almost felt like it was a mechanical butterfly! It was totally unfazed by me snapping away with my (dinky) camera, just moving from stem to stem, pausing in the leaves, and then leaving altogether. Hopefully it'll leave some caterpillars on my zizias, which are food for swallowtails.
