This month at Gardening Gone Wild, guest judge Alan Detrick is calling for images of winter's beauty that make you smile. This little sedge, Carex hystericina, made me do just that when I found it bravely poking its still-green culms above snow-covered leaves in the rain garden. This was taken recently, after one of our major snowfalls, of which there have now been four or five, I think. Already I'm losing count this winter!

See, that is what is so great about grasses, they show us beauty in every season. Nice shot.
Great shot of a brave little plant, Rose! I just posted some photos of our first snowfall, but the magic does wear off by the second and third one, doesn't it? Let's see, spring is less than three months away:)

Grassy things look so great in winter. I like how the snow highlights the shape of the foliage. And I learned a new word: culm.

MMD--"Culm" is indeed the name for the stems of sedges, as opposed to "stems" for grasses. I didn't know that until research for my article on sedges.

Good luck in the contest. Tis a brave plant indeed! I've been thinking about that contest but so far, nothing that screams of winter has come to mind. One of the downsides (I guess?) of gardening in the south!
